There’s one port that is spreading like wildfire and that would be the USB-C port. A few years back many Android smartphones were using Micro-USB ports to charge from. The Micro-USB port was widely used, as it also is used with many wireless chargers, portable chargers, mouses, keyboards and a bunch of other consumer electronics. The main flaw with it, though, is that the port was weak as it was unable to transfer high amounts of power.

The new USB-C port is highly improved because it can transfer a lot more and it also uses what’s called Power Delivery. A charging technology that can deliver up to 100W of power, this is one of the main reasons that USB-C ports are being installed on laptops now. You don’t have to solely rely on a DC charging brick that your laptop comes with. Your friend that you’re visiting or family can have a laptop charger if they have a Power Delivery charger.

The other two immediate innovations that we got from the Type-C port is its reversible sides, which means that either side could fit into a port. So you’d always place it into a port the right way. Transfer speeds for files are also faster.

The number of devices using this new port are vast now. All Android phones are using the port, and even phones that don’t have a Type-C port are still using Power Delivery, which means that you would still need a USB-C cable to charge them with. The phone that we’re talking about in this case would be the iPhone. From the iPhone X all the way to the current iPhone 11 Pro Max, the iPhone has been Power Delivery compatible. To fast charge it, you need to use a Lightning to Type-C cable.

The USB-C port along with PD charging has found its way into other Apple devices such as the new iPad Pro that was released back in 2018, and the MacBook that has been using the USB-C port for many years now. One of the best parts of Power Delivery charging is that you’re able to use a very powerful 61W PD charger to charge your laptop and smartphone, too. Even though PD compatible smartphones will fast charge at 18W, a more powerful charger will not damage your smartphone as it will only accept 18W of charging power from the charger.

Another factor the implementation of USB-C is that it’s used with gaming devices quite heavily, and it will continue to be used more. The biggest example of this would be the Nintendo Switch. The Switch does use a USB-C port and it’s also Power Delivery compatible. Using a USB-C port for the Switch was a great choice because even though you can game with the console on your TV, it’s also a handheld portable console that allows you to play triple-A games in the palm of your hands. However, because of that ability, the Switch also burns into battery power very quickly and that is why using a power bank that uses Power Delivery can be so useful.

Using a power bank with a Switch is such a given, that Anker (a popular charging tech company) and Nintendo have teamed up to create a power bank that was dedicated to the Switch. That’s not to say you can’t use other PD power banks for charging your Switch, because nearly all of them are compatible to use with the gaming console.

Moving on, there are also Virtual Reality headsets that have made the switch from the Micro-USB to USB-C. The Oculus Go is a VR headset that was released in 2018. The great part about the headset was that it had a built-in battery so you could have your VR experience without being attached to a wire to your computer. Then a year later the Oculus Quest was released and it was an upgraded version of the Oculus Go. The Oculus Quest also used a USB-C port, which goes to show that transitioning to the Type-C port is necessary even a year later, and it’s important because you can use a power bank to charge the VR headset and game at the same time. Most power banks are now only using USB-C ports for recharging and dropping the Micro-USB input port entirely.

Another gaming device that uses ports is controllers. The initial Xbox One controller and the Xbox Elite 1 controller use a Micro-USB port, but the new Xbox Elite 2 controller uses a USB-C port. Along with that, the Elite 2 controller has a built-in battery, once again showing that rechargeable products for the future should be using USB-C, as it’s a more accessible port. You can count on the Xbox Series controller to be using a USB-C port and for the Play Station 5’s controller to use a USB-C port, too.

To take matters even further with universal charging, the European Union even demanded that devices use a universal charger, and this is mostly pointed towards USB-C. As the EU pointed fingers at Apple saying that the iPhone should be using a port that other phones use, rather than using their proprietary Lightning port.

Overall, The USB-C port along with its powerful Power Delivery charging is making strides in the charging space for the portable devices that we use each day. It’s thanks to this port that someday soon we’ll only have to worry about grabbing a single charger to charge all of our devices.
