As I roam the wrecking yards of the land, photographing interesting discarded vehicles, one thing stays the same whether I’m in Minnesota or Colorado or Arizona: the presence of many Car-Freshner Little Tree air fresheners in these cars and trucks. Well-used vehicles on their last owners tend to benefit from a bit of odor assistance, of course, but generally one or two trees suffices to knock out the kind of olfactory funk you get in a 250,000-mile Daewoo. On a recent visit to a big self-service wrecking yard in Charlotte, North Carolina, however, I learned that Charlotteans seem to prefer thick decks of air fresheners in their well-traveled vehicles, and they don’t limit themselves to a single scent. Here’s a gallery of examples of what I call The Charlotte Stack.
