Layers of love: How lasagna steals our heart again and again – Food and Dining – Austin 360

We think of lasagna as an Italian dish, but Anna Hezel, an editor at Taste and the author of a new book called, simply, “Lasagna,” says it‘s not that simple. The word “lasagna” most likely comes from “laganon,” a Greek word for a dough that is cut into strips, but it‘s also connected to “lasana,” a pot in which the layers of pasta were baked. Cooks have been baking these layered dishes for more than 2,000 years. In the first century A.D., Marcus Gavius Apicius included a lasagna recipe in “De Re Coquinaria” that called for layering fish and pancakes. When most people think about lasagna nowadays, though, they probably imagine one made with curly-edged pasta and a heavy tomato-based bolognese. Because tomatoes didn‘t appear in Europe until the 1500s, early lasagnas certainly didn’t look like what‘s on the cover of a box of Stouffer’s. With such a long history, it’s no wonder that cooks, including Hezel, are getting so creative with lasagna today. Store-bought frozen lasagna has a special place in her heart, but for the book, Hezel wanted to come up with dozens of variations on homemade lasagna, using everything from no-b...

How Does USB-C Power Fit Into Gaming, Smartphones and Laptops -

There’s one port that is spreading like wildfire and that would be the USB-C port. A few years back many Android smartphones were using Micro-USB ports to charge from. The Micro-USB port was widely used, as it also is used with many wireless chargers, portable chargers, mouses, keyboards and a bunch of other consumer electronics. The main flaw with it, though, is that the port was weak as it was unable to transfer high amounts of power. The new USB-C port is highly improved because it can transfer a lot more and it also uses what’s called Power Delivery. A charging technology that can deliver up to 100W of power, this is one of the main reasons that USB-C ports are being installed on laptops now. You don’t have to solely rely on a DC charging brick that your laptop comes with. Your friend that you’re visiting or family can have a laptop charger if they have a Power Delivery charger. The other two immediate innovations that we got from the Type-C port is its reversible sides, which means that either side could fit into a port. So you’d always place it into a port the right way. Transfer speeds for files are also faster. The number of devices using this new port are vast now. All ...

DIY Air Conditioner Built From Weird Donor Appliance

There are some parts of the world where living without air conditioning borders on unthinkable. But in more moderate climates, it isn’t all that unusual. [Josh’s] apartment doesn’t have central air conditioning — the kind that connects to a forced-air heating/cooling system. It does, though, have a water circuit for air conditioning, so he decided to hack a few experimental air conditioners. He’s not starting completely from scratch. The two attempts he made at building his AC came from donor parts. The successful one started out as a hot water heater. The very first attempt didn’t quite work as well, using a refrigerator compressor and an evaporator from a baseboard heater. The flow control through the heat exchanger turns out to be very tricky, so [Josh] claims he mostly got ice right at the inlet and minimal cooling through the evaporator. The more successful one works better but still has a problem with the evaporator freezing that he’s trying to solve. He’s looking for suggestions on how to make it work better. As much as we like a good hack, our advice is to move to a different apartment building. We’ve seen other homemade coolers, but they are more like swamp coolers. If ...

Abrasive blasting is a technique that has been in existence since 1870 when the first abrasive

Abrasive blasting is a technique that has been in existence since 1870 when the first abrasive blasting process was patented by Benjamin Chew Tilghman. Abrasive blasting is the operation of forcibly propelling abrasive material against a surface under high pressure in order to achieve the following: To propel the material, pressurized fluid or air, a centrifugal wheel is used. Today, there are many variations to this process, such as sandblasting, sodablasting, shot blasting, and bead blasting. The key features of wet abrasive blasting include the ability to use very fine or coarse media with densities ranging from plastic to steel and the ability to use hot water and soap to enable synchronous degreasing and blasting to eliminate dust and remove hazardous material or waste (asbestos, radioactive, or other poisonous products) without danger to surfaces and structures, thereby achieving effective decontamination. Wet abrasive blasting process can be applied using all traditional blasting formats such as walk-in booths, hand cabinets, automated production machinery and total loss portable blasting units. Process speeds can be varied according to the requirements. For example, it c...

From the Archives: 350 photos of Richmond in the 1950s | From the Archives

In March 1956, jazz trumpeter Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong and his All-Stars played a concert at the Mosque, along with Woody Herman and his Third Herd. Ticket prices were $1.50, $2 and $2.50. Four days later, the Mosque was scheduled to host two shows by an emerging star, the day before his self-titled debut studio album was released. His name: Elvis Presley. In July 1950, heavyweight boxing legend Jack Dempsey came to Richmond as a headline attraction for a different event: He was referee of a wrestling match. He stayed at the Hotel John Marshall, which was certainly more peaceful than City Stadium — not having lost a punch over the decades, the 55-year-old got involved in the match there and knocked out the tag team partners Dick Lever and Wally Dusek. South Richmonders had this view of a Dec. 24, 1951, fire on North Side at the F.L. Parsley storage plant on Rady Street. Three fuel oil and kerosene tanks caught fire, sending black smoke across much of the city. More than 100 firefighters were needed to stop the blaze, which threatened a nearby stream, coal yard and other properties. When the owner of neighboring fuel tanks was told that his were saved, he calle...

People who are in need of a VPN service have plenty of options to choose from.

People who are in need of a VPN service have plenty of options to choose from. Most services offer decent encryption options nowadays, but what more does your VPN provider do to keep you anonymous? We take a look at the logging policies plus other privacy and security features of dozens of VPN providers. When we first started this VPN anonymity series, almost a decade ago, the market was relatively small and easy to oversee. Today, the VPN industry is booming with hundreds of companies offering a wide variety of services, some more anonymous than others. The VPN review business is also booming. Just do a random search for “best VPN” or “VPN review” and you’ll see dozens of sites filled with recommendations and preferred picks. We don’t want to make any recommendations. When it comes to privacy and anonymity, an outsider can’t offer any guarantees. Vulnerabilities are always lurking around the corner and even with the most secure VPN, you still have to trust the VPN company with your data. Instead, we aim to provide an unranked overview of VPN providers, asking them questions we believe are important. Many of these questions relate to anonymity and security, and the various compa...

Jeff Latimer and I were kicking story ideas around recently in his shop when he came

Jeff Latimer and I were kicking story ideas around recently in his shop when he came up with a winner. What if you decided to build a small-block Chevy for your Corvette using only what was available in 1968 and put it on the dyno? How much power could you make based only on what was available 50 years ago. What’s more, what have we learned in the years since about making power and could we make more? If you’re a graying hot rodder with achy bones and a long memory, you remember 1968 quite well. We were all young and had the limited cash we earned flipping hamburgers, mowing yards, painting houses, prepping new cars, or oiling lanes at the bowling alley. Money was hard to come by at that age and graduation from high school was a year or two away. We had groovy aftermarket parts from a number of legendary names like Holley, Sig Erson, Isky, Offenhauser, Edelbrock, Cal Custom, Carter, Weber, Mr. Gasket, Clay Smith, Moroso, Milodon and Summit Racing Equipment. Summit Racing Equipment opened its doors for the first time that year, and is now celebrating 50 years of changing the way we think about buying speed parts. Jeff decided to act on this idea of a retro 327 amassing what he ha...

A giant digital air fryer worth a staggering $600 has gone on sale for just $144 (pictured) – but shoppers will have to be quick if they want to get their hands on it The 14-litre Kitchen Couture air fryer (pictured) from online homewares store Milano Decor features three different cooking modes: 360 degree food rotation, oven-style heating and hot turbo air circulation These kitchen tools are appropriately named because they work by circulating hot air around the food inside, much like hot oil surrounds food to cook it all the way through on a stove top. Where ovens may be better for toasting, broiling and roasting, the air fryer is predominantly used to make food ‘crispy’ – without the fat content from oil.  What sets the air fryer apart from traditional models is its reasonable pr...
