Dell Inspiron 14 5000 2-in-1 (5482) Review & Rating

You won’t mistake it for a $1,200-plus HP, Lenovo, or LG (or even Dell’s more upscale Inspiron 7000 series), but the Inspiron 14 5000 2-in-1 is a sound convertible for about $900 in the peppy model we tested. Under 4 pounds is a good figure for a 2-in-1 convertible laptop. Under one grand is an even better one, particularly if the system in question has an easy-on-the-eyes 14-inch screen instead of the more common 13.3-incher. The Dell Inspiron 14 5000 2-in-1 (starts at $579.99; $899.99 as tested) meets those criteria, even if it lacks the elegance of our more expensive Editors’ Choice, the Lenovo Yoga C930. It’s a nice-looking, nicely built mainstream convertible. Also known as the Inspiron 5482, the Inspiron 14 5000 2-in-1 costs $579.99 with a Core i3 processor, a skimpy 4GB of RAM, and a 1TB hard drive. My $899.99 test unit steps up to a 1.8GHz (4.6GHz turbo) Core i7-8565U chip with an Intel UHD Graphics 620 integrated processor, along with 8GB of memory and a 256GB NVMe solid-state drive. Doubling the RAM and SSD to 16GB and 512GB respectively adds $200. The touch screen offers full HD (1,920-by-1,080-pixel) resolution; there’s no 4K option avai...

Microsoft Releases October 2019 Office Updates With Fixes, Improvements

Microsoft released the October 2019 non-security Microsoft Office updates that fix issues and add improvements to Windows Installer (MSI) editions of Office 2013 2010, Office 2013, and Office 2016. For instance, after applying this month’s update, “Outlook now can block the sending and receiving of Python files (.py, .pyc, .pyo, .pyw, .pyz and .pyzw) as attachments.” The updates can be downloaded from the Download Center or Microsoft’s Update service for manual installation. None of the Microsoft Office updates released today apply to the Click-to-Run Office apps, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home. Depending on the update, users might also need to have updates such as a Service Pack previously installed on their Windows devices, as is the case of some of the Microsoft Office 2013 updates that require the Microsoft Office 2013 Service Pack 1. Several of the Office October non-security updates released today only apply to certain programs like Word, Outlook, or Skype for Business. Locks For Guns, Meds Aimed At Suicide Prevention In Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The City of Alexandria has joined an effort to limit access to lethal means for those considering suicide. The city is offering free locking medication boxes and firearm trigger or cable locks. The free locks are part of the Lock and Talk Virginia initiative, which aims at safe and responsible care of guns and medication around the state. The initiative cites studies showing people are three times more likely to die by suicide when guns are accessible. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in Virginia. It’s the second leading cause of death for the 15-34 age group and fourth for the 35-54 age group. Prevention efforts are aimed at restricting access to these lethal means and talking with those who are considering suicide. The city’s free firearm locks and medication lock boxes come with information on safe handling and tips on securing firearms and medications. If you’re looking for other ways to get involved with suicide prevention, check out the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s National Capital Area Chapter, whose board is led by Alexandria’s own Ali Wa...

3D-Printed Architecture: More Evolution Than Revolution

There’s a soft buzzing sound coming from a tent that stands next to a hotel in a village in the Netherlands. Inside, an arm attached to a large orange-and-black printer on tracks applies concrete to a disc, like frosting on a cake. This is followed by a second layer. A man operates the laptop that’s connected to the printer. Here in Teuge, about 60 miles east of Amsterdam, a small building is being assembled layer by layer with a 3D printer. The building will be called De Vergaderfabriek, Dutch for “the Meeting Factory.” According to the companies behind the project, it will be the world’s first 3D-printed meeting space. The roughly 1,000-square-foot structure was supposed to be done months ago, but a neighbor objected to the project, which held it up. The local municipality also thought the original design wasn’t appropriate for the site, so the architect, Pim van Wylick, revised it, making the building smaller and shorter. 3D printing is sometimes hailed as a revolution for architecture and construction. Enthusiasts say the technology is much faster and cheaper than conventional building, and that it has a smaller environmental footprint. But so far, machine-printed buildings ...

Best extendable dining table: Choose from glass and wooden styles that are easy to assemble in any space Social/Facebook Social/Twitter

We all need some extra elbow room now and then, whether that’s at dinner parties and family festivities, or to make space for work, crafts and other table-top activities. Extendable dining tables are the ideal solution for providing that extra space when it’s needed. Once you’re done, they can be reduced in size again to free up space in the room. The most important thing to bear in mind when choosing an extending dining table is your required dimensions. Before you buy, carefully measure your room to work out the size of table you need, accounting for both the extended and non-extended lengths of the table. Interior design is another key factor when choosing a table. If this is going to be one of the first pieces of furniture you buy for your home, bear in mind that the style of your table could set the tone for the whole room. So, no pressure… To help you make your choice, we’ve tried out a range of dining tables – from contemporary designs to traditional and vintage-style options – considering design, build quality and how easy they were to extend. Some extendable tables require assembly at home. We advise checking with the seller before you buy, to ensure you don’t end up t...

Danielle James is the Fashion and Beauty Director for Hello Beautiful. When’s she’s not working, Danielle

Danielle James is the Fashion and Beauty Director for Hello Beautiful. When’s she’s not working, Danielle enjoys traveling, cooking Trinidadian food, Duke basketball and discovering the fun idiosyncrasies of NYC. All summer I have been working towards perfecting my wash and go. My hair is currently in a triangle tapered cut and it looks the edgiest and most defined in a wash and go. While I love the nutrients I’m able to give my hair, the one thing I don’t love about rocking a wash and go is the shrinkage. I’ll start with my hair by my chin and by the time it dries, it’s right by my ears. Honestly, it changes the look of the cut drastically and by 3PM…I’m over it. (Just my personal opinion). I got my hands on a sample travel pack of Aunt Jackie’s Don’t Shrink Flaxseed Elongating Gel ($5.89, target.com) and their Moisture Intensive Leave In Conditioner ($6.39, target.com). I went on an overnight trip and decided to pack it to give it a try for my wash and go. I washed my hair with the hotel shampoo and conditioner, stepped out and got to business. First, I sectioned my hair and began to apply the leave in conditioner. It smells really nice and as I shingled the produ...

Celebrities Rely on These High-End Facials for Photo-Worthy Skin

For many celebrities, an Oscar red carpet cameo is months in the making. Such procedures as Botox or fillers, which can cause bruising, are best done a couple of weeks ahead of time. Eyelash treatments, including Latisse, show optimal effects on week 16. And a healthy diet and exercise, plenty of water and sleep, and reduced alcohol are always recommended. However, for awards-goers looking to give their skin a pre-Oscar boost, these star-favored facial treatments require surprisingly little lead time. Beverly Wilshire, Beverly Hills The spa at this hotel famously featured in “Pretty Woman” is the only one in the world to offer Elemis Targeted Toning — a facial and body treatment that reduces the appearance of cellulite and lines. All body parts can be treated even the day of, and a red carpet package includes a David Webb jewelry box. Want head-turning spring flowers? Now is the time to buy

When I recently mentioned to a non-gardening friend that I needed to order my spring-flowering bulbs before all the “must-have” varieties sold out, she almost choked on her coffee before snorting with laughter at the very idea that there was such a thing. But, of course, there are; certain fashionable colour combinations (shades of apricot, salmon and peach, for example) have a huge impact on the availability of popular varieties, while enduring classics almost always sell out very quickly at this time of year as the annual rush to get spring-flowering bulbs in the ground begins. With that in mind, here’s a little shortlist of just some of this year’s “must-haves”, along with a guide to reliable suppliers. A giant ornamental allium with ultra-long-lasting, pollinator-friendly, violet-pink, deer and rabbit-resistant drumstick flowers (May-July) that reach a height of up to 100cm, are brilliantly decorative in a border and are also suitable for drying . . . what’s not to love? The only downside is the price per bulb (but even this can be justified by the fact that this hardy variety of ornamental allium is reliably perennial as long as you plant its large, fleshy bulbs deeply (12-...

The beauty industry is still failing black women | Funmi Fetto | Global

For years, hair and makeup products tended to exclude women of colour. Here, beauty columnist Funmi Fetto reveals how she faced up to racism in an industry that’s finally undergoing its own makeover If you had told my teen self I’d be a beauty journalist and that I would write a book on beauty, particularly one geared towards women of colour, I’d have called you a false prophet. “You can’t be what you can’t see” is a hackneyed phrase, but in my case rang true. I loved magazines, but I always skipped the beauty pages. The voices behind them didn’t speak to me. The faces on the pages didn’t look like me. The products weren’t geared towards me. I had no place there. Growing up, I had always heard my Nigerian parents and their friends say: “This is not our country.” And so, despite being British, I parked any expectation to be included in the beauty industry. It never occurred to me that I could be a part of this world, let alone driving change from within. When I started writing about beauty, almost 15 years ago, it was nothing to do with race. My reasons were pragmatic. I was a freelance fashion writer, work had dried up, so I turned my hand to writing everything and anything beca...
