Best ute 2019 comparison: Ford Ranger v Toyota HiLux v Mitsubishi Triton v Nissan Navara v Isuzu D-Max v Holden Colorado v Volkswagen Amarok v Mazda BT-50 v Mercedes X-Class v Ssangyong Musso XLV v LDV T60

We test 11 of the best double-cab utes on sale in Australia today, including towing, loading, in the city and suburbs, and off-road. It’s the most comprehensive test we’ve undertaken: 11 of Australia’s top-selling double-cab utes compared side-by-side across multiple disciplines. From towing a caravan, carrying a heavy load, to driving them unladen in the city and suburbs – as an increasing number of family buyers do – we’ve experienced each of these vehicles across all their likely habitats. It’s no secret Australians are gorging themselves on double-cab utes right now. They have, in effect, replaced Ford Falcons and Holden Commodores in driveways across Australia because they appeal to our sense of adventure. As the ads say, they’re built for work and play. While utes are still not quite ‘car-like’ to drive, they are largely safer and better equipped than before, and some almost feel like an SUV from behind the wheel. As we discovered, the ute category is one of the few segments where there are still stark differences in the way each vehicle drives – even if they all follow a familiar formula. We distinguished the shades of grey, and found some differences are black and white....

Thank you for registering with Physics World If you’d like to change your details at any time, please visit My account Less, it seems, is always more in the rarefied world of extreme-high-vacuum (XHV) systems. Operating at pressures of 10–10 Pa and lower, XHV is a core enabling technology of many big-science programmes – think the Large Hadron Collider at CERN or the LIGO gravitational wave observatory. At the other end of the scale, XHV underpins all manner of small-science endeavours – from R&D on quantum computing to the fabrication of next-generation semiconductor chips. Despite such versatility, significant gaps remain when it comes to understanding, comparing and benchmarking the technical specifications and performance of XHV chambers from different manufacturers. Fundamental to the successful operation of any XHV system is a chamber with ultralow outgassing rates, such that gases (typically hydrogen) dissolved in the bulk of the chamber material are removed or prevented from leaving the material surface. Trouble is, commercial vendors rarely report or specify outgassing rates for their XHV chambers. When they do, it is often tricky to compare the experimental d...

It’s not something a Lincoln aficionado, or even anyone with a general appreciation for history, wants

It’s not something a Lincoln aficionado, or even anyone with a general appreciation for history, wants to hear, but sources with knowledge of Ford Motor Company’s product plans claim the Lincoln Continental is headed for the grave. Speaking to Ford Authority, the sources claim Lincoln’s full-size flagship sedan won’t see a second generation, with parent company Ford choosing to pull the plug and discontinue the slow-selling model instead. Weak sales and the high cost of developing the model seem to have played a role in the decision. The automaker invested over $1 billion to bring the model back to the market in late 2016, the sources say, and the model’s slow sales aren’t refilling the coffers. If true, it’s not exactly a shock, as other vehicles built on the same CD4 platform —Ford’s Fusion and Lincoln’s MKZ — don’t seem to have a future, either. Ford hasn’t committed to the production of those vehicles after 2020, and recently halted the development program for the next-generation Fusion. Nor will any new Fusion hail from China or Europe, the company states. (The longer Continental rides atop a modified version of the CD4 platform.) While some Fusions and MKZs undergo a...

Morgan Stanley might be talking a bear case price target of $10 on Tesla (TSLA +1%),

Morgan Stanley might be talking a bear case price target of $10 on Tesla (TSLA +1%), but undaunted Ark Invest is still talking huge targets in a research note. “Even if full autonomy turns out to be ‘science fiction’ and Tesla cannot produce an autonomous car, ARK estimates that the electric vehicle opportunity alone would boost its stock 2-6 fold from $195 today to $560-$1,200 by 2023. If Tesla does solve for full autonomy, however, and its electric vehicle production surpasses our bear case estimates, TSLA could scale significantly higher than our previous $4,000 price target during the next five years, thanks to our newly introduced bull case for electric vehicle volumes,” write analysts Tasha Keeney and Sam Korus. Ark’s math: “At an average selling price of $48,250 (today’s ASP), Tesla’s EV revenue would total $82 billion at 1.7 million units and $145 billion at 3 million, respectively, in 2023. In the bear case, gross margins would average 25%, which is Tesla’s guidance, while selling, general, and administrative costs (SG&A) average 10% of sales, comparable to that of other premium auto companies even though its overhead should be mu...

“Once upon a time” seems like a good place to begin a story about Mab Graves,

“Once upon a time” seems like a good place to begin a story about Mab Graves, the self-taught, bubblegum-haired Pop Surrealist and growing object of widespread curiosity who looks as if she were sprung to life from one of her works by the flick of a magic wand. And, in a professional sense, she was—born from the paintings, sketches, and sculptures in the gorgeously cluttered, turquoise-walled, second-story studio of a converted 1880s tavern in Indianapolis’s Fountain Square neighborhood, where Graves lives and works. Friends and fans, who get frequent glimpses of this deliciously twee space on social media, refer to it as “The Forest.” A new visitor to The Forest might describe her artwork as “girly.” Maybe even “cute.” But a closer look reveals something more. The brunette cherubs in the artist’s sweet Victorian-style Valentine cards? They’re glaring, not beaming, and blood drips from their pouting lips. The fluffy felted-wool fuchsia poodle with big blue eyes and a hairdo like a ’60s beehive? He’s a Vampoodle, with fangs sharpened to a fine point—and on second thought, the beast’s peepers don’t look particularly friendly. And Snow White in the Black Forest, a print featuring t...

PepsiCo strikes alliance to boost Latin American recycling incentives

PepsiCo has announced the launch of “Recycling with Purpose,” which it calls a circular economy model designed to promote recycling in Latin America and the Caribbean region. “PepsiCo wants to be part of the solution and we will continue to work to build a world where the plastics we use never become waste,” says Monica Bauer, vice president of corporate affairs at PepsiCo Latin America. Regarding the new program, which involves an alliance with recycling incentives technology provider ecoins, Bauer adds, “We acknowledge that PepsiCo can’t do this alone.” PepsiCo describes ecoins as an initiative founded in Costa Rica designed to increase the collection of PET bottles and other materials. The program allows consumers to exchange their plastic materials for ecoins, a virtual currency they can use to earn discounts on a variety of products and services. Bauer tells the Recycling Today Media Group the program should do more than boost the collection of PET beverage bottles only. “Ecoins works across all recyclable materials that have a market value in that country,” she comments. “In Costa Rica, for example, they are collecting PET, cardboard, aluminum, Tetra Pak, glass, tires and...
