7 Most Common Spark Plug Wire Questions From Taylor Cable Products

A spark plug wire is one of those performance components that doesn’t receive much attention, yet it performs a critical task. Without spark plug wires, you might as well forget about getting to work! While a spark plug wire’s job might appear simply to transfer high voltage to the spark plug, this can and does require some sophisticated engineering. We gathered up seven of the more common questions enthusiasts have about spark plug wires and then expand on the engineering behind a quality set of spark plug wires.  Taylor Cable Products has been in the business of building spark plug wires since 1923. It recently expanded its line to include Vertex Magnetos. The company’s approach is to produce high-quality products in a wide variety of styles, but the main focus is spark plug wires, and that’s what we’ll be dealing with here.  We spoke with Justin Askren, a Taylor Cable technical specialist, who offered up some insight into spark plug wires. Some of his answers may surprise you. So let’s get started! A: StreeThunder is a good economy/daily-driver wire set, while our Spiro-Pro line is suitable for everything and is the most popular choice. The Thundervolt and 409 lines of wires...

Vitamin E Succinate Continues to Show Impressive Anti-Cancer Properties

Several recent short-term intervention studies failed to show vitamin E supplementation was protective against the development of various cancers, most notably lung and prostate cancer. In fact, in the SELECT study, individuals taking vitamin E supplements showed a 17 percent higher incidence of prostate cancer. In the SELECT study, researchers used a synthetic form of vitamin E known as dl-alpha tocopherol acetate. Some experts have argued this form of vitamin E has only half the potency of natural forms of vitamin E, and thus was a poor candidate for use in this and other trials. Others argue synthetic vitamin E competes with natural vitamin E (both tocopherols and tocotrienols) for receptor binding sites and other processes, reducing the cell’s vitamin E antioxidant defenses and/or reducing other anti-cancer effects afforded by natural vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol).1-10,19 Still others have implied vitamin E succinate should be the form of vitamin E used in intervention trials aimed at reducing cancer incidence, as it is the form of vitamin E with the strongest current research support as an anti-cancer agent.20 Adding to the confusion are recent studies that suggest ...

Buyer’s Guide: The Best Power Inverters for Your Car

From time to time, TTAC will highlight automotive products we think may be of interest to our community. Plus, posts like this help to keep the lights on around here. Learn more about how this works. Take a quick look around the place where you are seated. Chances are there are several items that require electricity, most of which you can take along in a car. Your smartphone, the laptop, coffee pot … ok, maybe not the last one. To address the demand for electrons, car maker have been busying themselves stuffing their machines with USB ports and 120V “household” outlets of various juice and amperage. Not every car gets it right, with some offering up only a single USB port to placate the yowling masses or placing the convenient outlet in a wholly inconvenient location. Or, simply, your ride is old enough not to have any of these gee-whiz conveniences. Those of us choosing to roll around in a 1989 Lincoln Mark VII will find it difficult to plug in, as will gearheads who take their cherry 1970 Chevy Chevelle to the local car show. Even the lucky sods with a Integra Type R in their garage must do without mobile power. Power inverters have been around for years, long before smartpho...

Electric cars are all the rage lately, but let’s not forget about the old standby –

Electric cars are all the rage lately, but let’s not forget about the old standby – internal combustion. The modern internal combustion engine is a marvel of engineering. Today’s engines and surrounding systems have better power, greater fuel economy, and lower emissions than anything that has come before. Centuries’ worth of engineering hours have gone into improving every aspect of the engine – with one notable exception. No automotive manufacturer has been able to eliminate the engine’s camshaft in a piston powered-production vehicle. The irony here is that camless engines are relatively easy to build. The average hacker could modify a small four-stroke engine for camless operation in their workshop. While it wouldn’t be a practical device, it would be a great test bed for experimentation and learning. A multi-cylinder gasoline engine is a complex dance. Hundreds of parts must move in synchronicity. Valves open and close, injectors mist fuel, spark plugs fire, and pistons move up and down. All follow the four-stroke “Intake, Compression, Combustion, Exhaust” Otto cycle. The camshaft controls much of this by opening and closing the engine’s spring-loaded intake and exhaust val...

They were originally perceived to be a tool for the culinary bourgeoisie. Years later, many cooks view them as one-trick ponies used to make killer steaks. (Of course, their true application reaches far wider.) Part of the issue is the gear associated with the circulator. Do you need a vacuum sealer and special, vacuum-sealable bags to go with it? According to Lauren Savoie of America’s Test Kitchen, you don’t need either. Though sous vide translates to “under vacuum,” Savoie, a senior editor with hundreds of hours of sous vide gear testing under her belt, says vacuum sealing is unnecessary. It was adopted because heat transfer through water is more efficient than heat transfer through air (so large pockets of air can promote unev...
